The Great Steam Whistle Makers

Over the years many companies and foundries have made steam whistles. Most are marked with the makers names or logos but even among the major brands of whistles, particularly in the early years, many whistles were not marked and we can only guess at their lineage.  Fortunately, most of the major whistle foundries, at least in the hay-day of whistle production, did mark their whistles.

Also, for the ones of us involved in the lore of whistle history, the major manufacturers of whistles also made many other items and in their commercial ventures produced a plethora of catalogs that are still available that allow us to follow the evolution of their products over the years. What I am going to attempt here is to give a small historical perspective on some of the major manufacturers of whistles and show some examples of their whistles over the years. In order to illustrate these pages I am going to use a combination of exerts from old catalogs and whenever possible will use images of actual whistles from my collection. I envision this secton to be very image intensive  and it may take some time to download a lot of the images. Please hang in there and I will attempt to make it worth the wait.

This section is going to be the most laborious of all of the parts of this web site as it requires a lot of research and pouring over old catalogs to extract their content. This section will grow over then next few months and may take some time to complete. And hopefully, it will never be complete and will continue to grow as more information is added and readers add their comments and suggestions.

Ultimately I hope to have a section on the following manufacturers:
